Second insight
Working to establish a more comfortable style of survival has grown to feel complete in and of itself as a reason to live, and we've gradually, methodically, forgotten our original question... We've forgotten that we still don't know what we're surviving for.

physical survival itself is a project. the first project even. all other projects are leisure projects by comparison.
ReplyDeletebut once some surplus is achieved beyond what is necessary to survive (and the West is far beyond that threshold) there are all sorts of leisure projects that present themselves, and every human seems to have one, either explicitly defined or vaguely. the television watcher, the collector of things, the hoarder of money, the spender of money, etc all may have as strong a commitment to their projects as the creator-outlaw-saint to his.
perhaps the most noble project is the one that allows you to live another moment, another day. the rest is leisure.
