To the fellow who just returned to the US from a great long trip abroad, you now find yourself among true infidels. You find yourself among people with no spine and no conviction. No sense of purpose other than to seek comfort and shelter and reassurance. These people can cause you no permanent damage in small doses, but your desire to be back among real people is a natural and sound instinct. Go west, young man, go west.
The travelers in the airport and the people going from city to city to "visit loved ones" and the security officers who corral them and the rudeness and ignorance does not reflect the true picture of this great expansive territory and her inhabitants. Living their lives in small towns, on the plain and in the mountains and in the north of California and the west of Oregon and Washington and in Montana and Wyoming and Arizona and New Mexico and ALASKA are many people who do not know what TSA is or why someone would do that job or why someone would pay for that job to be done.
Learn how to ride the motorcycle and save your money and refresh your knowledge about machines and when it's warm enough and you are ready, head west. Stay away from "interstate highways" and instead take the paved roads that locals use to get from small town to small town to conduct their business. Just as you did in South America listen to the things the small town people say. Seek employment as a farmer or a fisher or a miner and join a fraternity of people who do these things. You don't have to be a member of the arian nation to appreciate a place where they can gather without bother from the man.

yes to this. i know there are good people, people who still have the feeling and inheritance of the first pioneers. there is a good america and it is on the non-Federal highways in the small towns. indeed, on friday i leave for such a place in wisconsin, a town of 800 where my ancestors have always lived and my last name stands for very much.
