"When you are on the road, everything has a strange excitment to it."
He's right, the simple-living bmx rider from somewhere out east. He lives on a purpose he comes up with, and he is free to change his purpose daily. He may be referring to being on a trip physically away from home, traveling on the highways to cities and places that are not familiar.
He could also be referring to the travels between stages in one's life. Traveling as he does and reacting the way he does is a great metaphor for one way to pass through phases in life? Some days in life you might not do much else besides wait for nice weather as you watch your friends' words begin to slur.
